Meryl Streep says working moms aren't 'selfish' – 'We're human beings'

You can thankMeryl Streepfor the most emotional moment of "The Devil Wears Prada 2."

In the long-awaited sequel, fashion's high priestess Miranda Priestly (Streep) successfully saves Runway magazine: She finds an affluent new buyer, Sasha Barnes (Lucy Liu), for the flailing publication after an attempted coup by her former assistant, Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt).

The film ends with Miranda and features editor Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) in the back of a car, mulling over the uncertain future of journalism at large. Mid-conversation, Miranda reveals that she knows Andy has been writing a tell-all book about her time at Runway. Andy declares that she no longer wants to, but Miranda insists that she move forward with her exposé, ruefully lamenting the moments she missed of her twin daughters growing up.

"You should write it, and you should keep all the juicy bits in," Miranda tells Andy. "How impatient I am; how demanding and imperious and how much of my children's lives I've missed. Just put it all in there, because people should know there's a cost. But boy, I love working. I really do, don't you? I just love it."

It's a scene that carried weight for Streep, 76, a three-time Oscar winner who shares three daughters and a son with Don Gummer (they split in 2017). The Hollywood icon ad-libbed that piece of dialogue herself.

“That line wasn't in there,” Streep tells USA TODAY, seated with Hathaway on a recent afternoon. “That was something that I threw in because I just do love working. I do love working as an actor. And I thought, for women, it's the way that Miranda shares that insight: It's a little sneaky, like, ‘Don't you sneak a cigarette every once in a while?’ Because it's still frowned upon that you're going to try to do the selfish thing that is rewarding to yourself and [also] want to have a family. I mean, people do. I did. I did want to have both.

“We're human beings,” Streep adds. “We should be able to do that and model for our children – our boys and girls – that it’s great to be creative, and to be out in the world and doing our very level best, you know?”

As Miranda Priestly, Meryl Streep is fiercely committed to her job in "The Devil Wears Prada 2."

Hathaway, 43, has two young sons with her husband, Adam Shulman. The Oscar-winning actress has been working steadily for more than 25 years, with breakthrough roles in 2001's "The Princess Diaries" and 2006's original "The Devil Wears Prada."

“It's really amazing to be able to care for yourself economically,” Hathaway says. “I have been working since I was a teenager and I've been in charge of my own finances for that same amount of time, which means that I've signed every single check in my life as an adult. I've paid my rent. I put myself through college. All of those things, I took on that financial responsibility.”

As a result, “my life feels very much like my own,” Hathaway says. “I don't have to ask anyone for things. And I have no problems working to earn that freedom. I like it.” For many women, “that option has only been available for a few decades, which is crazy. So I don't really want to waste this opportunity.”

Anne Hathaway is determined to make something of her position at Runway in "The Devil Wears Prada 2."

The month-long "Devil Wears Prada 2” promotional tour took both A-listers across the globe, with stops in Mexico City, Seoul, Shanghai and Tokyo.

In each city, girls would come up to them “and say, ‘This meant so much to me,’ ” Streep recalls. “I thought of it as a sort of frothy, fun movie, but it had some other kind of pull for young people, and that's very heartening. That means that it's [resonated] in a lot of different cultures. And a lot of different cultures are in different places, in regard to how they feel about women working.”

'Devil Wears Prada' cast then and now in photos – See stars' evolution

Amid the release of "The Devil Wears Prada 2," see the stars' looks from 20 years ago and now, beginning here with Anne Hathaway.Hathaway opted for a stunning red dress in both 2006 and 2026, where she opted for a custom Louis Vuitton by Nicolas Ghesquière strapless tea-length gown. She filmed the role of Andy Sachs in her early 20s.

Andy and Miranda's poignant exchange is a direct mirror to the end of the first "Devil Wears Prada," which similarly ends with the two characterstalking in the back of a car in Paris. Only in that movie, Andy decided that she didn't want to wind up like Miranda, so she quit her job as her assistant.

“I was really touched by that line – ‘I love working’ – and I think that’s true,” director David Frankel says. "I admire people who love what they do so much that they’re determined to do it for all time, on their own terms. That’s admirable.”

In both films, "Miranda is a heroine for me,” Frankel says. “There's this [perception], ‘Oh, she's the evil boss!’ No, she's the hero. She's doing something that she loves. She's creating something day after day after day that's special and unique and iconic. And I admire that so much. And anybody who does anything with that same passion, and with that same excellence, deserves to be celebrated.”

Despite all their differences over the years, Andy respects that about Miranda, too. While Runway's long-term prospects look tentative at best, she decides there's no one she'd rather work alongside than her devilishly dedicated boss.

“It’s nice that she’s not walking away and throwing her phone in the fountain at the end,” Frankel says. “She's hanging on by her fingernails and hoping that she gets a say and hoping she's part of a team with Miranda. That’s a major change ‒ it shows maturity.”

Posting viaher TikTok accounton Friday, May 1,The Bacheloralum, 34, said she wanted to “clear the air” and “give you the short and not-so-sweet information” about why she had a strong dislike for Cooper.

Burnham says the beef stems from when the “Call Her Daddy” podcast previously had a recurring segment to make fun of her then-unborn daughter Alessi, 6, whom she shares with husbandArie Luyendyk Jr.(The couple are also parentsto 4-year-old twins Senna and Lux and 7-month-old daughter Livvy.)

“They had this regular segment ongoing and they thought it would be funny to make fun of our unborn baby,” Burnham explained.

Burnham said she didn’t care if she and her husband were mocked, but her unborn child was crossing a line.

“Make fun of us, don’t care. But they took it too far. They made a regular segment before she was born and after she was born where they were sexualizing our child and talking very inappropriately and disgustingly about her,” Burnham added.

The reality TV alum said the comments reached the point that she and Luyendyk considered taking legal action against Cooper but ultimately chose not to.

“We thought it would blow over. She just kept going on forever. Eventually she stopped and we kind of forgot about it and now that it’s resurfacing again, it still makes me so furious,” Burnham added. “I just hope that all of this controversy that’s hanging around her right now causes her to rethink the level that she is willing to stoop to to get attention, views, whatever it is that she’s looking for because it’s not okay and that’s all I have to say about that.”

Us Weeklyreached out to Cooper’s representative for comment.

Alix Earle Responds to Alex Cooper’s Request to Air Their Drama Publicly: ‘On It!’

Burnham previously spoke about her fury over the comments during an episode of the “Unplanned” podcast in 2023.

“I was really upset because they would mention her and then make inappropriate comments right after. It was so classless,” she said at the time.

Burnham continued, “Arie was like, ‘Don’t do anything about it.’ I was about to hire a lawyer. Honestly, they should be in big trouble for doing that. It’s not OK. I never said anything because he felt like if we addressed it publicly, it would only make it bigger. That’s what they want.”

Earlier this week,Burnham declaredshe was throwing her support behindAlix Earleamid the influencer'sdrama with Cooper.

“Team @alixearle all the way,” Burnham wrote via her Instagram Stories on Thursday, April 30. “It’s about time Alex Cooper gets called out. & yes, it's personal.”

Undermanned Wolves try to eliminate balanced Nuggets in Game 6

Faced with key injuries, the Minnesota Timberwolves will try to close out their Western Conference first-round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets in Game 6 on Thursday in Minneapolis.

Field Level Media

Minnesota successfully managed Game 4 despite losing star Anthony Edwards and his starting backcourt mate, Donte DiVincenzo, early. But with Edwards sidelined due to a bone bruise and hyperextension in his left knee and DiVincenzo gone with a torn right Achilles tendon, the Timberwolves dropped a close-out opportunity on Monday in Denver, 125-113.

Edwards and DiVincenzo were both catalysts as Minnesota gained the early advantage in the series, with Edwards going for 30 points and 10 rebounds in Game 2. DiVincenzo scored a total of 31 points in Games 2 and 3, both Timberwolves victories.

With the two perimeter playmakers out Monday, Minnesota committed 25 turnovers -- two more than the Timberwolves lost in their previous two games combined, and a team-high dating back to before the All-Star break.

"A lot of silly, forced play by guys trying to make something out of nothing," Minnesota coach Chris Finch said of the Game 5 turnover woes.

Finch also pointed to Denver's defensive adjustments, noting that the Nuggets "put two (defenders)" on Ayo Dosunmu for the first time in the series.

Dosunmu, a late-season acquisition via trade from Chicago, emerged as the hero in Game 4 after Edwards and DiVincenzo exited. He scored 43 points, bookended by performances of 25 and 18 points, respectively, in Games 3 and 5.

Aside from Julius Randle's 27 points, however, no other Minnesota player managed more than 13 in Monday's loss.

Denver, meanwhile, got 18-plus points from four of its five starters in the elimination contest. Among the quartet was forward Spencer Jones, who has seen a significant uptick in minutes with Aaron Gordon dealing with a calf injury.

Jones, who scored 11 total points in the series' first four games, went for 20 in Game 5. Gordon, who averaged 16.2 points per game in the regular season, played limited minutes in Game 4, but missed both Games 3 and 5 and is listed as questionable for Thursday.

Jones, who averaged just 5.5 points per game in the regular season, delivered his highest-scoring performance since Dec. 1 (28 points) at an opportune time.

"It's something that happened throughout the season, guys going down and me getting an opportunity to start," Jones said. "I'll get more minutes, but the role is still the same, the duties are still the same."

Building on the momentum from his making four 3-pointers Monday, Jones could play a role in Denver's key perimeter scorer, Jamal Murray, finding cleaner looks from beyond the arc.

Murray has scored 30 points three times in the series, and with his 24 in Game 5, he is up to 26.0 points per game through the five contests. That's a team-high, outpacing three-time league Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic's 25.4 ppg.

However, Murray has gone 0-for from deep twice, including the Game 3 loss.

Jokic, meanwhile, had his best game of the series Monday, finishing as a plus-18 with 27 points, 16 assists and 12 rebounds. He was a plus-one, minus-21 and minus-12 in Denver's three losses.
